A THERNAL STRESS RESISTANCE PARAMETER AS A MEASURE OF THE CRACK SUSCEPTIBILITY OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

THERMAL LOADINGS ARE AN IMPORTANT CAUSE OF STRESS AND FAILURE IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. WHEN A PAVEMENT IS SUBJECTED TO A TEMP. GRADIENT, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE PAVEMENT TO DEVELOP CRACKS. IN ORDER TO PROVIDE AN INDEX THAT WILL EVALUATE A GIVEN PAVEMENT SURFACE, A THERMAL STRESS RESISTANCE PARAMETER CAN BE USED. THIS PARTICULAR PARAMETER INTERRELATES THE TENSILE STRENGTH, STIFFNESS MODULUS, COEFFICIENT OF THERMAL EXPANSION AND POISSON'S RATIO FOR MIXTURES. IT IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF THERMAL SHOCK EVALUATION OF MATERIALS ON A MACROSCOPIC SCALE. ALTHOUGH IT DOES NOT PREDICT PRECISELY WHEN A PAVEMENT WILL CRACK, IT DOES ILLUSTRATE THAT PAVEMENTS THAT HAVE CRACKED SHOW LOW VALUES OF THIS PARAMETER. /CGRA/RRL/
