FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS - NETHERLANDS
THE COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF THE BASE COURSES MAINLY USED IN THE NETHERLANDS ARE DISCUSSED. THE CONSTRUCTION MOST FREQUENTLY EMPLOYED CONSISTS OF GRAVEL SAND ASPHALT PREPARED IN A NORMAL ASPHALT MIXING PLANT AND LAID DIRECTLY ON THE SAND BED. INSTEAD OF THE FIRST LAYER OF GRAVEL SAND ASPHALT (6 CM), SOMETIMES A LAYER OF SAND ASPHALT, 10-12 CM THICK, IS APPLIED. AN EQUIVALENT OF THIS FIRST LAYER WHICH IS FREQUENTLY USED FOR PRIMARY ROADS IS A 15 CM LAYER OF SAND CEMENT. THIS IS APPLIED BY STABILIZING THE SAND OF THE LOCAL SAND BED. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE MAIN RESULTS OF EXTENSIVE LABORATORY RESEARCH INTO THE BREAKING PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN AND BITUMINOUS MIXES, AND INTO THE ROLE OF FILLER IN THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF BITUMINOUS MIXES. EXPERIMENTS ARE DESCRIBED IN WHICH THE COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WITH THE AID OF ELEVEN ROLLERS OF DIFFERENT TYPES HAVE BEEN STUDIED. THEY HAVE LED TO VARIOUS CONCLUSIONS AS REGARDS THE RELATION BETWEEN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROLLER AND THE RESULTING DEGREE OF COMPACTION AS WELL AS THE NON-SKID PROPERTIES AND THE SMOOTHNESS OF THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT. A COMPARISON OF THE CALCULATED BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PAVEMENTS WITH THE VERTICAL STRESSES INDICATES THAT TRACKING CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE ALLOWABLE STRESSES BEING EXCEEDED, IN ONE CASE IN THE UPPER BITUMINOUS LAYER AND IN THE OTHER CASE IN THE SAND BED. THE APPLICATION OF BITUMINOUS SLURRIES BASED ON CATIONIC BITUMINOUS EMULSIONS IS DESCRIBED. THIN WEARING COURSES AND SURFACE DRESSING USING ALTERNATIVES TO BITUMINOUS BINDERS (RESINS ETC.) ARE EMPLOYED. INCREASING USE OF RESIN-BASED WEARING COURSES, ESPECIALLY ON STEEL DECK BRIDGES, IS MENTIONED. EXPERIENCE WITH TEST PANELS IS REPORTED AND THE FACTORS, INFLUENCING CRACK FORMATION ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
