DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS - DENMARK
RESULTS FROM THE AASHO ROAD TEST SHOW AGREEMENT WITH THE USE OF A DESIGN METHOD BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF PERMISSIBLE STRESSES CALCULATED WITH THE USE OF THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY. FURTHER, A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT IT IS NOT PERMISSIBLE TO SUBSTITUTE A DUAL WHEEL LOAD WITH A SINGLE WHEEL LOAD AS FAR AS THE CALCULATION OF THE RADIAL STRESSES IS CONCERNED, AND THAT POISSON'S RATIO HAS AN IMPORTANT BEARING ON THE STRESSES. RATIONAL DESIGN METHODS MUST BE MODIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS. OBJECTIONS ARE RAISED AGAINST THE USE OF THE SWISS PLATE-LOAD TEST AS STANDARD IN RESEARCH WORK AND IN CONNECTION WITH RATIONAL DESIGN OF ROAD STRUCTURES. /AUTHOR/
