GENERAL HIGHWAY MATTERS - JAPAN
STUDIES OF LAYER STRUCTURE ON THE BASIS OF THEORY OF ELASTICITY AND ON THEORY OF VISCOELASTICITY ARE REPORTED. INVESTIGATIONS MADE ON DAMAGED PAVEMENTS CONCLUDE THAT TRAFFIC VOLUME AND THICKNESS OF SLAB FORM PRINCIPAL SOURCES FOR DAMAGE TO CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. A REPORT IS GIVEN ON MEASURING APPARATUSES AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBSERVED EVENNESS OF VARIOUS KINDS OF ROADS AND COEFFICIENT OF COMFORT. THE RELATIONSHIP IS DESCRIBED OF COMFORT COEFFICIENT AND A CRITICAL POINT WHERE REPAIR IS NEEDED. DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF SURFACE SKIDDING, ITS MEASURING APPARATUSES AND FRICTION COEFFICIENT OF VARIOUS KINDS OF PAVEMENT. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF DRAINAGE DESIGN OF MEDIUM FACE OF SLOPES & ROAD-BEDS FOR EXPRESSWAYS. REPAIRS RESURFACING OR RELAYING ARE DISCUSSED FROM AN ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW.
