CONSIDERATIONS ON THE STRUCTURAL NUMBER

THE CBR METHOD HAS BEEN GENERALLY EMPLOYED FOR DESIGNING ASPHALTIC PAVEMENT IN JAPAN. THE DETERMINATION OF THE TOTAL DEPTH BY MEANS OF CBR DESIGN CURVE SEEMS TO BE RATIONAL IN EXPERIENCES, BUT THE QUESTIONS HAVE ARISEN ABOUT THE THICKNESS DESIGN OF EACH LAYER BY THIS METHOD. THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PAVEMENT PROVES INSUFFICIENT AND THE CRUSHED STONE BASE IS GOING TO BE REPLACED BY THE STABILIZED BASE. AT PRESENT, THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN METHOD IS GOING TO BE MODIFIED IN JAPAN. THIS PAPER ATTEMPTS TO SHOW THE CONSIDERATIONS CONCERNING THE STRUCTURAL NUMBER, AS FOLLOWS' /1/ THE COEFFICIENT OF RELATIVE STRENGTH SEEMS TO BE CORRELATIVE WITH THE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION OF THE MATERIAL. /2/ THE TENTATIVE RELATIONS BETWEEN STRUCTURAL NUMBER, WHEEL LOAD AND CBR WERE SET UP FROM THE FIELD INVESTIGATIONS, AND /3/ BY THE USE OF ABOVE MENTIONED RESULTS, THE CAUSE OF CRACKING OF THE ASPHALT PAVEMENT ON THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY ROUTE NO. 17 WAS ANALYZED. /AUTHOR/
