THE DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS USING CONTINUOUS WAVES

THE DETERMINATION AND MEANING OF ELASTIC CONSTANTS IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT LAYERED MEDIA ARE INVESTIGATED. METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES ARE REVIEWED, AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ELASTIC PARAMETERS DISCUSSED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT VIBRATION METHODS HAVE VERY NEARLY REACHED THE STAGE OF PRACTICAL USEFULNESS, PROBABLY IN THE FIELD OF PAVEMENT CONTROL. THERE ARE DEFINITE ADVANTAGES IN USING MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF WAVE, AS THE TWO LANE CONSTANTS CAN THEN BE DETERMINED. SOME PRESENT DIFFICULTIES AND POSSIBLE SOURCES OF ERROR WERE INDICATED.
