A RESILIENCE DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS
THE RESILIENCE FACTOR WAS INCORPORATED INTO FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN TO ELIMINATE OR MINIMIZE EARLY FATIGUE FAILURE OF ASPHALT-CONCRETE SURFACING CAUSED BY EXCESSIVE TRANSIENT DEFLECTION. PREVIOUS FIELD STUDIES PROVIDED MAXIMUM TOLERABLE DEFLECTION DATA. A LABORATORY DEVICE TO MEASURE RESILIENCE PROPERTIES OF ROADWAY MATERIALS--THE RESILIOMETER--WAS DEVELOPED AND DESCRIBED. QUALITATIVE TEST RESULTS OF PRINCIPAL HIGHWAY SOILS WERE REPORTED. FIELD DEFLECTION AND LABORATORY RESILIENCE TESTS WERE CORRELATED TO INCORPORATE THE RESILIENCE FACTOR INTO DESIGN CRITERIA. CORRELATION INVOLVED SAMPLING AND TESTING 20 DIFFERENT ROADWAYS DURING A FOUR-YEAR PERIOD. FIELD SAMPLING AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES USED IN THE CORRELATION WERE EXPLAINED, AND SAMPLE COMPUTATIONS WERE GIVEN TO ILLUSTRATE LABORATORY RESILIENCE DATA ANALYSIS METHODS. RESULTS WERE PRESENTED ON A FIELD TRIAL OF RESILIENCE DESIGN PROCEDURE IN WHICH PRELIMINARY SAMPLES FROM VARIOUS ROADS WERE TESTED USING RESILIENCE DESIGN CRITERIA. PREDICTED DEFLECTIONS DETERMINED IN THE PRELIMINARY ANALYSES WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE MEASURED IN THE FIELD AFTER CONSTRUCTION WAS COMPLETED. RESILIENCE DESIGN PROCEDURE WAS FOUND CONSISTENT AND EFFECTIVE IN ISOLATING POTENTIAL RESILIENCE PROBLEMS.
