THE MECHANICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF ENVIRONMENT IN PAVEMENT DESIGN AND EVLAUATION
THE BASIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOIL PROPERTIES AND SOIL ENVIRONMENT IS DISCUSSED. SOIL ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INCLUDING CLIMATE, GROUND-WATER, VEGETATION AND ROAD GEOMETRY MAY BE EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF SOIL SUCTION. SOIL SUCTION, IN TURN, MAY BE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SUBGRADE SOILS AND THUS RELATED TO PAVEMENT DESIGN AND EVALUATION. THREE BASIC DESIGN BOUNDARY CONDITIONS ARE SUGGESTED, NAMELY - SOIL COMPOSITION , SOIL MOISTURE ENVIRONMENT AND ROAD GEOMETRY. EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED WHICH SUBSTANTIATES THESE CONCEPTS. /CGRA/
