SOME NOTES ON PAVEMENT STRUCTURAL DESIGN - PART 2

THIS CONTINUATION OF A PAPER PRESENTED TO THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD IN 1963 IS CONCERNED WITH THE ELASTIC LAYERED SYSTEM METHOD OF DESIGN PROPOSED BY D.M. BURMISTER IN 1943. FOR SUBGRADES WITH CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIOS OF ABOUT 4 TO 20 THE BURMISTER EQUATION INDICATES THICKNESSES ALMOST IDENTICAL WITH THOSE OF THE U.S. CORPS OF ENGINNERS AND THE CANADIAN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTS EQUATION. THE REASON FOR THE GOOD AGREEMENT IN THE LATTER CASE IS INVESTIGATED. THE APPROXIMATE METHOD OF ANALYSIS FOR A MULTI LAYERED PAVEMENT CAN LEAD TO UNDERDESIGN FOR A SMALL NUMBER OF LAYERS AND TO OVERDESIGN FOR A LARGER NUMBER. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN METHOD IN WHICH ALL MATERIALS ABOVE THE SUBGRADE ARE TREATED WITH BITUMEN. THERE IS AN URGENT NEED FOR A SIMPLE LABORATORY METHOD FOR MEASURING ACCURATELY THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OR SOME OTHER MATERIAL STRENGTH VALUE OF SUBGRADES AND DIFFERENT PAVEMENT MATERIALS. /RRL/
