MOVING LOAD TEST ON EXPERIMENTAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE HIGHWAY SLAB, PART B--ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATIONS

AN EXPERIMENTAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE HIGHWAY SLAB WAS TESTED FOR PRESTRESSING LOSS, BOND STRENGTH, AND CORROSION EIGHT YEARS AFTER ITS CONSTRUCTION AND TWO YEARS AFTER IT HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO MOVING LOAD TESTS. APPROXIMATELY FOURTEEN PERCENT LOSS IN PRESTRESS WAS INDICATED. BOND FAILURE OCCURED BETWEEN THE CONDUIT AND THE PAVEMENT WHEN LONGITUDINAL CRACKS ALONG THE CONDUIT WERE FORCED OPEN. THE DEVELOPED BOND STRENGTH BETWEEN THE PRESTRESSING STRAINS AND THE GROUT WAS ABOUT 421 LB. PER SQ IN. CORROSION COVERED ABOUT 30 PER CENT OF THE SURFACE AREA OF THE STRANDS AND THE AVERAGE BREAKING STRENGTH OF THE STRANDS WAS APPROXIMATELY 27,200 POUNDS. THE BOND BETWEEN THE GROUTED TENDONS AND THE CONCRETE WAS ADEQUATE TO TRANSFER THE PRESTRESSING LOADS WHEN TRANSVERSE CUTS WERE MADE. THE INHERENT WEAKNESS IN THE PAVEMENTS, THE LONGITUDINAL CRACKS THAT DEVELOP OVER THE TENDONS, CAN BE MINIMIZED BY PROVIDING TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT OR BY REDISTRIBUTING THE PRESTRESSING STRANDS MORE UNIFORMLY ACROSS THE PAVEMENT. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A TEST SECTION OF THIS PAVEMENT BE INCORPORATED AS A PART OF THE HIGHWAY SYSTEM WHERE THE PERFORMANCE CAN BE STUDIED UNDER NORMAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS.
