ROADSIDE PROBLEMS ON THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM: FOREST AND CONSERVATION ASPECTS

LAND MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS WITHIN AND ADJACENT TO THE RIGHT-OF-WAY ALONG HIGHWAYS OF THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE 41,000 MILES OF HIGHWAYS INCLUDE MERELY WITHIN THEIR RIGHT-OF-WAY OVER A MILLION ACRES OF LAND. THE LENGHTY DISCUSSION SESSION EMBRACED ZONING AND CONTROL OF ADVERTISING BEYOND THE RIGHT-OF-WAY, PROTECTION OF FOREST ROADSIDES, FOREST SERVICE RIGHT-OF-WAY, GAME CROSSINGS, LAND USE AND DRAINAGE PROBLEMS, SLASH TIMBER REGULATIONS, RUNOFF, ROADSIDE SERVICES, COMMUNICATIONS FACILITIES, LANDSCAPING, ACCESS CONTROL, LEGISLATION AGAINST ENCROACHMENTS ON RIGHT-OF-WAY, RIGHT-OF-WAY OVER PUBLIC LANDS, SPEED-CHANGE LANES AND MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS.
