ROADSIDE PROBLEMS ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM: PLANNING AND DESIGN ASPECTS
RECENT AASHO AND HRB COMMITTEE MEETINGS HAVE FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWING SIX ISSUES: (1) TYPICAL FEATURES OF AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY (NUMBER OF LANES, URBAN/RURAL DIVISION, CONTROLLED ACCESS, AND GEOMETRIC DESIGN STANDARDS); (2) LOCAL AND ALIGNMENT (EFFECTS OF TOPOGRAPHY, USE OF DIVIDED SECTIONS WHOSE "MEDIANS" SEPARATE VIRTUALLY INDEPENDENT HIGHWAYS); (3) AERIAL SURVEYS AND ROADING PLANNING (USE OF SCALE MAPPING AND CONTOUR INTERVALS, DEPICTION OF LAND USE, DISCOVERY OF CONSTRUCTION AND OTHER MATERIALS); (4) THE HIGHWAY AND ADJOINING LAND (ADVERSE DRAINAGE EFFECTS, DANGERS OF STREAM CHANNEL RELOCATION IN URBAN AREAS); (5) SELECTION AND DESIGN OF REST AREA SITES; AND (6) SPECIAL PLANTING PROBLEMS (CUTTING VERSUS CONSERVATION, URBAN/RURAL DIVISION, NOISE SCREENING, SAFETY FUNCTIONS OF PLANTING, EROSION CONTROL).
