DETERMINATION OF DESIGN VALUES FOR FILLING STATIONS AND REST AREAS ON FEDERAL MOTORWAYS /IN GERMAN/
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE REQUIRED DIMENSIONS OF SERVICE AREAS, NUMBER OF PARKING SPACES AND OPTIMUM DISTANCE BETWEEN THE AREAS WERE DRAWN UP BASED ON TRAFFIC COUNTS CARRIED OUT IN 1967 AT 14 SUCH AREAS. IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT 11% OF VEHICLES USING THE SIDE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY NEARER TO THE SERVICES MADE USE OF THE FACILITIES OFFERED - ON AVERAGE 26% OF THESE VEHICLES WERE LORRIES. 60% OF ALL CARS AND 25% OF ALL LORRIES WHO DROVE INTO THE SERVICE AREA REQUIRED FUEL. THE AVERAGE DURATION OF STAY WAS 28 MINUTES FOR CARS AND 31 MINUTES FOR LORRIES. MORE THAN HALF OF THE CAR DRIVERS USING THE SERVICE WERE UNDERTAKING THE JOURNEY FOR BUSINESS REASONS. /FG/RRL/
