TURF ESTABLISHMENT ON HIGHWAY RIGHT-OF-WAY SLOPES - A REVIEW
THE DEVELOPMENT OF TURF ON NEWLY GRADED ROADSIDE SLOPES IS THE MOST ECONOMICAL METHOD OF CONTROLLING EROSION AND PROVIDING PLEASANT SCENERY. PERTINENT INFORMATION IS SUMMARIZED ON TURF ESTABLISHMENT UNDER CONDITIONS FOUND ALONG NEWLY GRADED HIGHWAYS FOR USE IN FUTURE PLANNING RESEARCH. ROADSIDE DEVELOPMENT, PARTICULARLY TURF ESTABLISHMENT, INVOLVES A COMBINATION OF PROBLEMS WHICH ARE ENCOUNTERED ONLY ALONG ROADSIDES. STEEP SLOPES AND INFERTILE, COMPACTED SUBSOILS MAKE TURF ESTABLISHMENT DIFFICULT. THE CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED IN GRASS AND LEGUME SPECIES FOR ROADSIDE TURF ARE /1/ RAPID ESTABLISHMENT TO PREVENT UNDUE EROSION, /2/ THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN THEMSELVES, /3/ LOW GROWTH HABITS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS WHICH PERMIT EASE IN MOWING, AND /4/ ABSENCE OF WEED-LIKE STRUCTURES. THIS REVIEW OF LITERATURE ON TURF ESTABLISHMENT PRESENTS INFORMATION ON PROBLEMS THAT ARE COMMON TO PRACTICALLY ALL ROADSIDE SEEDINGS.
