MAINTENANCE IN EROSION CONTROL
TO ESTABLISH AN EFFECTIVE VEGETATIVE COVER ON HIGHWAY SLOPES AND DITCHES, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT GROUND COVER BE ESTABLISHED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. THUS, A GREAT DEAL OF CARE IS REQUIRED IN PREPARING A SEED BED AND ASSURING AN ADEQUATE SUPPLY OF PLANT NUTRIENTS. A FERTILE SEED BED IS THE BASIC FOUNDATION. BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF HIGHWAY EROSION - STEEP SLOPES AND CONCENTRATIONS OF RUN-OFF WATER, SUPPLEMENTARY SEEDING AIDS ARE NECESSARY. THESE INCLUDE' THE USE OF TACKING SUBSTANCES, MULCHES AND FABRICS, AND AN ANNUAL APPLICATION OF FERTILIZER. THE USE OF CHAIN LINK FABRIC ON ROCK SLOPES AS PROTECTION AGAINST MATERIAL FALLING ON THE PAVEMENT IS DESCRIBED. THE INSTALLATION OF THIS FABRIC ON A SECTION OF BADLY FRAGMENTED ROCK CUT IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK BRITISH COLUMBIA IS DESCRIBED. /CGRA/
