PROPOSED REVISIONS IN CULVERT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

PRESENT SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF CONCRETE BOX CULBERTS ARE REVIEWED, AND REVISIONS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR HIGHWAY LOADINGS, DISTRIBUTION OF LOADS, IMPACT AND DEAD LOADS. FACTORS CONSIDERED WERE (1) SATISFACTORY LOADING, (2) VERTICAL COMPONENTS OF PRESSURE EXERTED ON PLANES AT VARIOUS DEPTHS BELOW THE SURFACE, AND (3) THE MOMENTS INDUCED IN CULVERT DECKS OF VARIOUS SPANS AT SELECTED DEPTHS. THE PROPOSED SPECIFICATION REFLECTS AN INCREASE IN THE LOADING COMMONLY APPLIED IN THE DESIGN OF BOX CULVERTS. THE BENEFITS OBTAINED WOULD BE A MORE ACCURATE EVALUATION OF STRESSES INDUCED BY SUCH LOADS, AND A RATIONALIZATION OF DESIGN PROCEDURE ACCOMPANIED BY ECONOMIES INHERENT IN THE MORE PRECISE ANALYSIS EMPLOYED. /AUTHOR/
