SEDIMENT-PICKUP FUNCTION
A FUNCTION EXPRESSING THE RATE OF REMOVAL OF BED IS PRESENTED IN TERMS OF THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES: LOCAL VELOCITY, COEFFICIENT OF DRAG, PARTICLE DIAMETER, BED SLOPE, ANGLE OF REPOSE, AND FLUID DENSITY IN THE VICINITY OF OF THE PARTICLE. THE VARIABLES OF THE FUNCTION ARE ESTABLISHED BY CONSIDERATION OF THE FORCES ACTING ON A TYPICAL SURFACE PARTICLE. THE FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE RESULTS OF AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY. THE SEDIMENT-PICKUP FUNCTION IS FORMULATED AS A LOCAL RATE OF BED REMOVAL IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO INCORPORATE THE FUNCTION IN THE DIFFERENTIAL FORM OF THE EQUATION OF CONTINUITY. /ASCE/
