RUNOFF FORECASTING BY VARIABLE TRANSFORMATION
THE LINEAR PREDICTION THEORY IS EXTENDED TO NONLINEAR RAINFALL-RUNOFF SYSTEMS BY A SLIGHT MODIFICATION. VARIABLES OF RAINFALL AND RUNOFF ARE TRANSFORMED BY NONLINEAR FUNCTIONS INTO A DOMAIN WHERE THE COHERENCE OF RAINFALL AND RUNOFF IS CONSIDERABLY INCREASED. THE RUNOFF PREDICTION IS MADE IN THE TRANSFORMED DOMAIN. THE INVERSE TRANSFORM YIELDS IMPROVED RUNOFF. EXAMPLES ARE SHOWN TO ILLUSTRATE THAT THE METHOD IS REMARKABLY EFFECTIVE. /ASCE/
