SUGGESTED CORRELATION BETWEEN STORM SEWAGE CHARACTERISTICS AND STORM OVERFLOW PERFORMANCE

AN INVESTIGATION IS MADE OF THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF STORM RUN-OFF FROM A MIXED AREA DRAINED HALF ON A COMBINED AND HALF ON A PARTIALLY SEPARATE SYSTEM. A POSSIBLE SOLUTION IS TO SUGGEST THE PROBLEM OF RIVER POLLUTION FROM STORM SEWAGE OVERFLOWS BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THIS AND OTHER INVESTIGATIONS. THE BASIS OF THIS METHOD OF PREVENTING POLLUTION IS THE PROVISION OF SUFFICIENT STORAGE CAPACITY AT OVERFLOWS TO PROTECT WATERCOURSES, EVEN SMALL ONES, AGAINST SEVERE SUMMER STORMS. ALSO DESCRIBED IS A SCHEME APPLYING THESE IDEAS TO A LARGE EXISTING AREA DRAINED ON THE PARTIALLY SEPARATE SYSTEM AND VARIOUS PRACTICAL PROBLEMS ARE COVERED. /RRL(A)/
