HYDRAULIC CONSIDERATIONS ON HIGHWAY BRIDGE DESIGN

BRIDGE DESIGNERS SHOULD CONSIDER THE ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF PREVENTING DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRIDGE FAILURES DUE TO HYDRAULIC FORCES IN EACH CASE, IN ADDITION TO THE STRUCTURAL LOAD REQUIREMENTS, AS OUTLINED IN THE AASHO STANDARDS. THIS CONCLUSION WAS REACHED AFTER A SERIES OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN 1965, CAUSED EXTENSIVE BRIDGE FAILURES IN COLORADO. THE FACTORS OF SCOUR, TRANSVERSE LOADING, RELIEF CHANNELS AND BANK PROTECTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE HYDRAULIC CONSIDERATIONS DISCUSSED SEEM ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE FOR BRIDGE DESIGN TO PREVENT VARIOUS TYPES OF BRIDGE FAILURES.
