THE HIGHWAY CORRIDORS RADIATING FROM MELBOURNE ARE BEING PROGRESSIVELY UPGRADED TO FULL FREEWAY STANDARDS, NECESSITATING INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIVE MERITS AND DEMERITS OF THREE GENERAL TYPES OF INTERCHANGES--- DIAMOND, PARTIAL CLOVER-LEAF, AND "T" OR "Y"--- BETWEEN FREEWAYS AND LOCAL ROADS IN RURAL AREAS. THE SPACING, WARRANTS, LOCATION, DESIGN, AND OTHER FEATURES OF THESE TYPES ARE EXAMINED WITH RESPECT TO COST, SAFETY, AND CONVENIENCE. ADAPTABILITY TO INCREASING LONG-TERM DEMAND IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE. INCLUDED ARE ACCEPTED DESIGN STANDARDS FOR RURAL FREEWAYS, A DISCUSSION OF THE PAPER, AND A CLOSURE BY THE AUTHOR.
