LIGHTING RESEARCH AND HIGH MOUNTED SYSTEMS

LIGHTING RESEARCH FALLS INTO THREE AREAS: (1) NEW LIGHT SOURCES AND IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING SOURCES, (2) CONTROL AND DISTRIBUTION OF LIGHT FROM SOURCES, ESPECIALLY THROUGH LUMINAIRE MECHANICS, AND (3) APPLICATIONS. RECENT PROGRESS IN ALL OF THESE AREAS IS REVIEWED, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE THIRD, UNDER WHICH HIGH-MAST LUMINAIRES ARE DISCUSSED. COMPLEX INTERSECTIONS PREVIOUSLY REQUIRING 140 CONVENTIONAL POLES AND LUMINAIRES CAN NOW BE ADEQUATELY LIT BY A TENTH THAT NUMBER. AMONG THE ADVANTAGES OF SUCH A SYSTEM ARE REDUCTION IN FIXED OBJECTS ALONG THE ROADWAY, REMOVAL OF FIXTURES TO A GREATER DISTANCE FROM THE HIGHWAY, BETTER VISIBILITY, LESS MOTORIST CONFUSION, IMPROVED DAYTIME APPEARANCE, FEWER CABLE RUNS, AND LESS INSTALLATION TIME. MAINTENANCE CAN BE CONDUCTED AWAY FROM THE CARRIAGEWAY WITHOUT CLOSING TRAFFIC LANES. SPECIFIC SYSTEMS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION, PROTOTYPE, AND DEVELOPMENT STAGES ARE DISCUSSED.
