DESIGNING "FAIL-SAFE" STRUCTURES FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY
A REVIEW IS MADE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN IMPACT- REDUCTION STRUCTURES ON HIGHWAYS. THE MAJOR TOPICS DISCUSSED ARE TOLERABLE DECELERATION LIMITS, FRANGIBLE AND BREAKAWAY STRUCTURES (BOTH WOOD AND METAL, INCLUDING SUPPORTS FOR OVERHEAD STRUCTURES), SLIP-BASE LUMINAIRE SUPPORTS, AND ENERGY-ABSORPTION CRASH BARRIERS (BARRELS PLACED AT A GORE). AN APPENDIX MAKES DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BREAKAWAY SUPPORTS.
