THE EFFECTS ARE DISCUSSED OF TEMPERATURE, FROST, SUNSHINE, WIND, HUMIDITY, PRECIPITATION, RUNOFF AND EVAPORATION ON VARIOUS PHASES OF HIGHWAY ACTIVITIES, AND THE APPLICATION OF CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA ARE DISCUSSED. THE CLIMATOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS ARE DIAGRAMMATICALLY SUMMARIZED OF VARIOUS SECTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES ACCORDING TO A 20-YEAR PERIOD. REFERENCES ARE MADE TO PUBLICATIONS OF THE U.S. WEATHER BUREAU, U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, AND AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS. AN OUTLINE IS PRESENTED OF NEEDED RESEARCH.
