USE OF COMPUTERS FOR ROAD DESIGN

THE HISTORICAL USE BY COUNTY HIGHWAY ENGINEERS OF COMPUTERS AS AN AID TO HIGHWAY DESIGN IS EXAMINED. IT DEALS WITH THE GROWTH OF THIS USE AND THE DESIRE OF AUTHORITIES AND THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT TO INTEGRATE THE WORK WHICH HAS BEEN DONE AND PRODUCE A HIGHWAY DESIGN SYSTEM WHICH COULD BE AVAILABLE TO ALL HIGHWAY ENGINEERS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. A JOINT THREE MONTHS' PROJECT OF THE COUNTIES AND THE MINISTRY IS DESCRIBED AND DETAILS AND METHODS OF USE OF THE SYSTEM DEVELOPED ARE EXPLAINED. THE INTEGRATED PROGRAM SYSTEM IS BASED UPON THE USE OF COORDINATES TO DEFINE THE POSITION OF ANY POINT EITHER ON THE GROUND OR THE HIGHWAY AND IT INCLUDES A DIGITAL GROUND MODEL. THE PROGRAMS DEAL WITH ALL ASPECTS OF DESIGN FROM HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENT TO THE CALCULATION OF EARTHWORKS' QUANTITIES. /AUTHOR/
