CONSIDERATIONS ON THE BEARING CAPACITY OF VERTICAL AND BATTER PILES SUBJECTED TO FORCES ACTING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

THE PAPER PRESENTS THE RESULTS FROM NUMEROUS TESTS USING MODEL PILES IN A COHESIONLESS MATERIAL. THREE DIFFERENT PILES, OF DIAMETERS 13MM, 20MM, AND 35MM, AND OF LENGTHS UP TO 50 CM, WERE UTILIZED. THE PILES ARE CLASSIFIED AS SEMIRIGID COMPARED TO THE SOIL. THE PILES WERE TESTED TO FAILURE OF THE SOIL UNDER A VARITY OF PILE POSITIONS AND LOAD INCLINATIONS. EXPERIMENTALLY DETERMINED RESULTS YIELDED THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: THE BEARING CAPACITY OF AXIALLY LOADED BATTER PILES IS GREATER THAN THAT OF COMPARABLE VERTICAL PILES; THE BEARING CAPACITY OF VERTICAL PILES IS GREATER UNDER INCLINED LOADS THAN VERTICAL LOADS; THE RESISTANCE OF BATTER PILES AGAINST VERTICAL LOADS INCREASES WITH INCREASING ANGLE OF PILE INCLINATION UP TO APPROXIMATELY 22.5 DEGREES: AND THE RESISTANCE OF PILES TO HORIZONTAL LOADS VARIES BETWEEN WIDE LIMITS DEPENDING ON THE INCLINATION OF THE PILE AXIS. PILES BATTERED IN THE LOADING DIRECTION DEVELOP HIGHEST RESISTANCES. /AUTHOR/
