DESIGN OF THIN WALLED BEAMS
THE PRESENCE OF COMPRESSIVE STRESSES IN THIN WALLED BEAMS UNDER MOMENT GIVES RISE TO PROBLEMS OF LOCAL INSTABILITY AND SUBSEQUENT WEAKENING OF THE BEAM. A SIMPLE, DIRECT METHOD OF ANALYZING THE BEHAVIOR OF SUCH A BEAM IS OBTAINED ON THE BASIS OF THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. AN EXPRESSION FOR THE CRITICAL MOMENT TO INITIATE LOCAL INSTABILITY, TOGETHER WITH THE USE OF THE CONCEPT OF 'EFFECTIVE WIDTH' OF THE COMPRESSION FLANGE, IS INCORPORATED IN THE DESIGN ANALYSIS. GOOD AGREEMENT WAS OBTAINED WITH BOTH EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL RESULTS. /TRRL/
