THE AIM OF THIS PURELY THEORETICAL STUDY IS TO STRESS THE COMMON PRINCIPLE OF INSTRUMENTS USED TO MEASURE THE EVENNESS OF ROADS. THE CLASSICAL PIECES OF APPARATUS ARE CONSIDERED AS MECHANICAL FILTERS, AND THE CHARACTERISTIC VALUES ARE FORMULATED MATHEMATICALLY AND ILLUSTRATED GRAPHICALLY. SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT INSTRUMENTS ARE CONSIDERED: THE NORMAL VIAGRAPH, THE COMPENSATED VIAGRAPH, THE ANGLE MEASURING APPARATUS (GONIOGRAPH), THE AASHO PROFILOMETER AND THE OTTO-GRAF INSTITUTE INCLINOMETER.
