INSTRUMENT SYSTEM FOR MEASURING PAVEMENT DEFLECTIONS PRODUCED BY MOVING TRAFFIC LOADS

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A FEASIBILITY STUDY THAT HAS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FIRST-GENERATION INSTRUMENT SYSTEM OF MEASURING TRANSIENT PAVEMENT DEFLECTIONS. ACCELEROMETERS EMBEDDED IN THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE ARE USED TO SENSE THE BASIC MOTION. DUAL ANALOG INTEGRATION IS USED TO OBTAIN AND RECORD OUTPUT INDICATIONS PROPORTIONAL TO DISPLACEMENT. THE CIRCUIT CHARACTERISTICS ARE SUCH THAT DYNAMIC VERTICAL MOVEMENTS AS SMALL AS 0.002 IN. OR HORIZONTAL MOVEMENTS AS SMALL AS 0.0005 IN. OCCURING WITHIN LESS THAN 2 SECONDS CAN BE RECORDED. THESE CHARACTERISTICS ALLOW THE SYSTEM TO BE USED FOR VEHICLE SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 25 MPH AND FOR ANY NORMAL PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. THESE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS COULD BE ALTERED, IF DESIRED, TO ACCOMMODATE THE LARGER, LONGER MOVEMENTS THAT OCCUR ON BRIDGE DECKS.
