THE ROAD IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS--DENMARK

A FALLING WEIGHT DEFLECTOMETER HAS BEEN USED TO MEASURE THE DEFLECTION OF EXPERIMENTAL ASPHALT CONCRETE ROADS IN DENMARK AND HOLLAND UNDER SHORT PULSES OF 5 TONS FORCE. THE RESULTS OF THESE EXPERIMENTS ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM THE CORRESPONDING RESULTS OF STATIC PLATE-BEARING TESTS. THE DYNAMIC MEASUREMENTS SHOW TEMPERATURE AND THICKNESS EFFECTS TO A MUCH HIGHER DEGREE THAN THE STATIC MEASUREMENTS INDICATE. THE LARGE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN THE STATIC AND DYNAMIC MODULI SHOW THAT THERE IS NO VALID RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO METHODS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE FALLING WEIGHT DEFLECTOMETER IS A FAST AND CHEAP METHOD OF TESTING A ROAD LAYER'S BEHAVIOR UNDER A SHORT-TIME LOAD OF 5 TONS, AND THAT THE DEFLECTOMETER GIVES A GOOD MEASURE OF THE REACTION OF A ROAD SURFACE TO FAST-MOVING HEAVY TRAFFIC.
