ROAD METER CORRELATIONS: IOWA STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION

AFTER A SERIES OF TESTS WITH ROUGHOMETERS AND THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER THE COMMISSION DECIDED TO EMPLOY THE LATTER IN ANNUAL CHECKS OF ITS ROAD METERS ON ONE-HALF MILE SECTIONS HAVING PSR'S RANGING FROM 2.7 TO 4.6. AT PRESENT THERE ARE 54 SUCH SECTIONS. THE CHLOE SLOPE VARIANCE AND THE ROAD METER SUMMATION OF COUNTS ARE DETERMINED FOR ALL CORRELATION SECTIONS, AND THE FIT IS PLOTTED BY A COMPUTER PROGRAM. IN ALL CASES THE CORRELATION COEFFICIENT HAS BEEN BETTER FOR A PARABOLIC FIT THAN FOR A LINEAR ONE. A CORRELATION IS MADE ANNUALLY IN MAY, AND THEN WEEKLY CHECKS ARE MADE ON SIX CORRELATION SECTIONS. THE VERIFIED CORRELATION EQUATION IS COMBINED WITH THE FLEXIBLE AND RIGID EQUATIONS FROM THE AASHO ROAD TEST, AND THE RESULT IS PLOTTED ON A SEMILOGARITHMIC GRAPH. AN INVENTORY OF IOWA'S 10,000 MILES OF PRIMARY HIGHWAY, INCLUDING A CRACKING AND PATCHING SURVEY, HAS BEEN CONDUCTED AND STORED ON MAGNETIC TAPE TO BE USED IN DETERMINING MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION PRIORITIES.
