CONCRETE SLAB RESTING ON A STRATIFIED MEDIUM
IT IS KNOWN FROM EXPERIMENTS THAT CONCRETE SLABS MAY WORK THEMSELVES PARTLY LOOSE FROM THE BASE UNDER THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE CHANGES, ESPECIALLY DURING THE SUMMER AND WINTER. IN THIS STUDY NUMERICAL RESULTS ARE REPORTED THAT COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH PHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS. IT IS ASSUMED THAT ONLY ONE ELASTIC SLAB RESTS ON THE SOIL, WHICH IS ALSO ASSUMED ELASTIC AND IS REPRESENTED BY A LAYERED ELASTIC HALF-SPACE. THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE SLAB AND THE SOIL CAN BE BILATERAL OR UNILATERAL. THE ACTUAL SLAB--SOIL CONTACT SURFACE IS AN UNKNOWN OF THE PROBLEM, AS ARE THE DISPLACEMENTS OF THE SLAB AND THE SOIL. THE EQUATIONS ARE SOLVED BY USING VARIATIONAL METHODS. I. E., BY MINIMIZING THE POTENTIAL ENERGY OF THE STRUCTURE.
