LOCKED-WHEEL PAVEMENT SKID TESTER CORRELATION AND CALIBRATION TECHNIQUES

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS NCHRP PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT AND VERIFICATION OF METHODS FOR IMPROVING SKID RESISTANCE TESTING WITH THE LOCKED-WHEEL DEVICE. THE FINDINGS ARE BASED ON MEETINGS WITH USERS OF THE DEVICE, FIELD AND LAB TESTS, AND EXPERIENCE WITH A SIMULATION MODEL. IN GENERAL, INADEQUATE PROCEDURES RATHER THAN EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MEASUREMENT DESCREPANCIES AND POOR REPEATABILITY PROVISIONS FOR SPEED AND TEMPERATURE CORRECTIONS, SPEED AND STEERING UNIFORMITY, AND CALIBRATION PROCEDURES ARE RECOMMENDED. THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICAL INFERENCE TO DATA ANALYSIS IS DEMONSTRATED.
