THE INTERPRETATION OF THE MEASUREMENTS OF SURFACE DEFLECTIONS AND WAVE VELOCITIES IN THE STUDY OF HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS, WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

MEASUREMENTS OF PAVEMENT DEFLECTION PROFILES AND WAVE VELOCITIES HAVE BEEN MADE AT THE FREE SURFACES OF SOME HIGHWAY STRUCTURES. THE STRUCTURES FORM PART OF A CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AT THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE TEST FACILITY. THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ANALYZED IN ORDER TO ESTIMATE TWO SIGNIFICANT ELASTIC PARAMETERS, YOUNG'S MODULUS AND POISSON'S RATIO, FOR HIGHWAY PAVEMENT MATERIALS. THE DEFLECTIONS WERE ANALYZED BY AN ITERATIVE COMPUTATION OF THE SURFACE DEFLECTIONS, EMPLOYING A CONVERGENT ROUTINE THAT IMPROVES TRIAL VALUES OF THE MODULI. IN ORDER TO SIMPLIFY THE PROCEDURE, INDEPENDENT VALUES OF THE LAYER THICKNESSES AND OF THE POISSON'S RATIOS FOR THE VARIOUS COMPONENT MATERIALS WERE SUPPLIED. THE VALUES OF THE MODULI OBTAINED WERE USED AS THE TRIAL VALUES FOR THE COMPUTATION OF THE VELOCITIES OF SURFACE WAVES AT VARIOUS FREQUENCIES. THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE MEASUREMENTS MADE BY MEANS OF THE SHELL VIBRATOR. THE RESULTS ARE VALIDATED BY CONSIDERATION OF ELASTIC WAVE DISPERSION PHENOMENA. /AUTHOR/
