THE USE OF THE BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION TEST IN CONTROL OF CONSTRUCTION AND WORK, WITH DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE
DEFLECTION TESTS HAVE BEEN UTILIZED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS BY ROAD AUTHORITIES AS A GUIDE IN ASSESSING THE STRUCTURAL ADEQUACY OF EXISTING PAVEMENTS. IN RECENT TIMES A NUMBER OF ENGINEERS HAVE ADVOCATED ITS USE AS A METHOD TO GIVE A QUICK CHECK ON THE DENSITY OF A LAYER DURING CONSTRUCTION. THIS PAPER, WITH EXAMPLES, DISCUSSES THE INTERPRETATION OF DEFLECTION TESTS PERFORMED DURING CONSTRUCTION. ITS USE IN THIS SPHERE IS COMPLEX; HOWEVER, ITS MAIN ADVANTAGE APPEARS TO BE IN ASSESSING THE OVERALL STABILITY OR IN DETECTING WEAK AREAS AT ANY STAGE OF THE CONSTRUCTION. IT IS PRIMARILY A TEST TO MEASURE THE UNIFORMITY IN STABILITY AND INDICATE AREAS WHICH MUST BE CORRECTED TO IMPROVE THIS VARIATION. THERE SEEMS TO BE LITTLE PROSPECT THAT THE DEFLECTION BEAM, AS SUCH, CAN BE DEVELOPED AS AN INSTRUMENT TO CONTROL DENSITY. /ARRB/
