ROAD TRANSPORT AND ROAD PAVEMENTS-THE INFLUENCE OF WEIGHT AND FREQUENCY OF VEHICLES ON THE DESIGN AND LIFE OF PAVEMENTS: CONSEQUENCES OF CHANGES IN PERMITTED WEIGHTS
FROM THE RESULTS OF THE AASHO-ROAD-TEST A SIMPLE RELATION BETWEEN THE PAVEMENT THICKNESS, PROPERTIES OF THE SUBSOIL, AND WHEEL LOAD AND NUMBER OF LOAD APPLICATIONS CORRESPONDING TO SEVERAL VEHICLE CATEGORIES IS DERIVED. THIS RELATION IS USED FOR CALCULATING A DISTRIBUTION INDEX FOR THE ALLOCATION OF PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION AND RECONSTRUCTION COSTS TO THE VARIOUS TRAFFIC CATEGORIES. CALCULATION METHODS AS PROPOSED BY THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY AND IN A REPORT FROM THE GERMAN FEDERAL REPUBLIC ARE DISCUSSED. EXAMPLES BASED ON THE P4-AXLE LOAD EQUIVALENCY ARE GIVEN. SUPPOSITIONS ARE MADE ABOUT THE VARIATIONS IN THE AXLE LOAD DISTRIBUTION. /TRRL/
