STEEL FIBERS IN AIRPORT RUNWAYS
THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES TESTS PERFORMED BY THE US ARMY CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING RESEARCH LABORATORY (CERL), IN WHICH FIBROUS-REINFORCED CONCRETE AND PLAIN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS WERE SUBJECTED TO SIMULATED WHEEL LOADS OF THE C5A CARGO AIRCRAFT. THE FIBROUS CONCRETE PAVEMENT, CONTAINING STEEL FIBRES 1 IN. LONG AND 16 MM DIAMETER, ALTHOUGH ONLY HALF AS THICK AS THE PLAIN CONCRETE PAVEMENT, WAS ABLE TO WITHSTAND TWICE AS MANY LOAD APPLICATIONS AND ALSO INCUR LESS DAMAGE. IT IS CLAIMED THAT THE FIBERS PREVENT FLAWS IN THE CONCRETE FROM ENLARGING UNDER LOAD TO FORM VISIBLE CRACKS. /TRRL/
