EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE WARPING STRESSES ON THE ULTIMATE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF RIGID PAVEMENTS
THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS THROUGH THE SLAB THICKNESS OF RIGID PAVEMENTS IS EXAMINED. THE TEMPERATURE GRADIENT CAUSES DIFFERENTIAL EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION, RESULTING IN TEMPERATURE WARPING STRESSES, WHICH REDUCE THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PAVEMENT. IN THIS ARTICLE, THESE TEMPERATURE WARPING STRESSES ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN CALCULATING THE DESIGN THICKNESS AND ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PAVEMENT. HOWEVER, FROM THE RESULTS OF THE CALCULATIONS, IT IS CONCLUDED THAT CONSIDERATION OF WARPING STRESSES DOES NOT MAKE SUBSTANTIAL DIFFERENCE IN REQUIRED PAVEMENT THICKNESS FOR ULTIMATE LOAD ANALYSIS, AND THEREFORE, NEED NOT BE CONSIDERED IN SUCH CALCULATIONS. /TRRL/
