FROST EFFECTS ON HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS. SURVEY TO DETERMINE THE DEPTH OF FROST PENETRATION
AFTER A GENERAL REVIEW OF FROST DAMAGE TO PAVEMENTS, THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE BEHAVIOR OF GRANULAR MATERIALS UNDER FROST CONDITIONS. THE MECHANISM OF FROST FORMATION INSIDE THE PAVING STRUCTURE IS DESCRIBED. SOME INDICATIONS ARE GIVEN AS TO FROST PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO BE ADOPTED DURING THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION STAGES, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO BASE AND SUBBASE CONSTRUCTION. PRELIMINARY RESULTS ARE GIVEN OF TEST SOUNDINGS, CARRIED OUT ON THE MILAN-ROME MOTORWAY DURING THE WINTER OF 1970-71, TO DETERMINE THE DEPTH OF FROST PENETRATION IN TERMS OF THE FROST INDEX (DEGREES PER DAY). /TRRL/
