USE OF CHEMICAL INSULATING MATERIALS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING: RESULTS FROM NORWEGIAN TEST ROADS
THERMAL INSULATING MATERIALS ARE USED IN NORWAY BOTH AS FROST PROTECTION FOR NEW ROADS AND FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF EXISTING ROADS WITH A REDUCED SPRING THAW BEARING CAPACITY. FROM A BEARING CAPACITY POINT OF VIEW THESE ROADS HAVE BEHAVED QUITE SATISFACTORILY, ALTHOUGH CONVENTIONAL METHODS OF BEARING CAPACITY MEASUREMENTS DURING CONSTRUCTION HAVE SHOWN THEM TO BE INFERIOR TO ORDINARY ROADS IN THIS RESPECT. INSULATING BOARDS ARE NORMALLY PLACED IN THE BOTTOM PART OF THE ROAD PAVEMENT. FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF ROADS IT IS AN ADVANTAGE TO PLACE THE BOARDS FAIRLY HIGH IN THE CONSTRUCTION. MOISTURE PICKUP IN THE INSULATING BOARDS WILL REDUCE THE INSULATING EFFECT OF THE BOARDS OVER THE YEARS.
