METHODS OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN - A REVIEW

DURING AND IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, RESEARCH IN THE U.S.A. ON ROAD PAVEMENT DESIGN WAS MAINLY DIRECTED TOWARDS EMPIRICAL STUDIES USING SOIL STRENGTH AND SOIL CLASSIFICATION PARAMETERS. MOST ROAD AUTHORITIES ADOPTED THESE DESIGN METHODS, AND SOME ARE USING THEM EVEN TODAY. SINCE THESE EARLY DAYS, THE TREND HAS BEEN TOWARDS A RATIONALIZATION OF EMPIRICAL METHODS AND, IN SOME CASES, TOWARDS A MORE THEORETICAL APPROACH TO DESIGN. THE MORE THEORETICAL DESIGN METHODS WILL PROVIDE DESIGN INFORMATION IN REGARD TO VARIATIONS IN TRAFFIC LOADING, PAVEMENT MATERIALS, AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS. HOWEVER, THE VALUE OF THE VARIOUS METHODS WILL NOT BE KNOWN UNTIL THE PERFORMANCE DATA OF TEST ROADS HAS BEEN CRITICALLY ASSESSED. THIS WILL REPRESENT THE NEXT ERA IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN. /AUTHOR/
