AIRFIELD PAVEMENT RESEARCH TRENDS
THE TRANSITION FROM THE INITIAL EMPIRICAL AND SEMIEMPIRICAL PROCEDURES TO IMPROVED ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES OF AIRFIELD PAVEMENT DESIGN WHICH TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE PRINCIPAL PARAMETERS AFFECTING PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE IS REVIEWED. THE ROLE OF IMPROVED COMPUTATIONAL TECHNIQUES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOPHISTICATED DESIGN PROCEDURES IS POINTED OUT. APPLICATION OF THE SYSTEM APPROACH TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED PLAN FOR DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, OPERATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS IS SEEN TO BE HELPFUL IN DEFINING AREAS WHERE FUTURE RESEARCH IS NEEDED MOST. /IAA/
