FIELD OBSERVATIONS OF SH-WAVES IN LAYERED PAVEMENTS, WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR GENERATING AND OBSERVING HORIZONTALLY POLARIZED SHEAR WAVES (SH WAVES), SUITABLE FOR INVESTIGATING LAYERED PAVEMENTS. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN IMPROVED TORSIONAL VIBRATOR AND ASSOCIATED DRIVING AND MEASURING EQUIPMENT, TOGETHER WITH THE FIELD PROCEDURE USED. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHASE VELOCITY AND IMPOSED FREQUENCY OF SH-WAVES AS OBSERVED ON A NUMBER OF TWO- AND THREE-LAYER PAVEMENTS IS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED. WHERE POSSIBLE THE OBSERVED PHASE VELOCITY-FREQUENCY RELATIONSHIPS HAVE BEEN INTERPRETED TO DEDUCE THE SHEAR WAVE VELOCITY IN EACH LAYER OF THE PAVEMENT. /AUTHOR/
