A STUDY OF HIGHWAY REST AREA WASTEWATER DISPOSAL
THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON STUDIES REST AREA DISPOSAL PROBLEMS AND RELATED FACTORS FOR THE WASHINGTON STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION DURING THE PERIOD, JUNE TO DECEMBER 1971. THIRTEEN OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS ARE IDENTIFIED. DESIGN CRITERIA ARE PRESENTED. METHODS OF WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL ARE CONSIDERED INCLUDING: PIT PRIVY; CHEMICAL TOILET; HOLDING TANK OR VAULT; SEPTIC TANK WITH DRAIN FIELDS OR SEEPAGE PITS ; PONDS WITH AND WITHOUT SPRAY IRRIGATION; RECYCLE SYSTEM WITH HOLDING TANKS AND STORAGE VAULTS; PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL PROCESSES AND BIOLOGICAL OXIDATION PROCESSES. EACH METHOD IS CONSIDERED ALONG WITH CERTAIN MANUFACTURERS ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE. /HRIS/
