KINGSBURY GRADE SERRATED SLOPES AND SLOP SEEDING
THE SOIL ON THIS PROJECT ON THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS CONSISTS OF DECOMPOSED GRANITE WHICH IS INCAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING EROSION AND POSES AESTHETIC PROBLEMS AS WELL. CONSTRUCTION SUGGESTIONS ON SLOPE CUTTING SUCH AS A HORIZONTAL STEP LONGER THAN THE PLANNED DIMENSION; THE CONSTRUCTION OF HORIZONTAL SERRATIONS ON THE SAME GRADE AS THE ROADWAY; AND THE LOCATION OF THE FIRST SERRATION ARE DESCRIBED. THE TYPE OF FERTILIZER AND SEED USED TO REVEGETATE THE SLOPES WAS DETERMINED BY LABORATORY TRAILS. A SLOW RELEASE FERTILIZER AND A SEED MIXTURE OF GRASSES AND NATIVE WOODY SPECIES WAS SELECTED. THE MIXTURE OF SEEDS, FERTILIZER, PAPER AND ORGANIC PULP WAS APPLIED BY THE HYDRO-MULCH SEEDER WHICH CAN HANDLE DELICATE SEEDS WITHOUT BREAKAGE. COSTS OF THE SERRATED SLOPED AND THE SEED-FERTILIZER MIXTURE ARE DISCUSSED AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE PROJECT ARE INCLUDED. THE YEAR-OLD GROWTH ON THE SERRATED SLOPES IS CONSIDERED SUCCESSFUL BY SPECIALISTS.
