The concept of drydocking very large tankers and bulk carriers at four-year intervals with no maintenance of the structure against corrosion, either above or below water, at any other time is examined, including - the economic reasons supporting this concept; painting techniques to obtain high-build coatings; different fouling problems encountered by large ships which spend very short times in port; and coating operations during shipbuilding.
