SAFETY BARRIERS AND LIGHTING COLUMNS

PROBLEMS ARISING FROM THE SITING OF LIGHTING COLUMNS ON THE CENTRAL RESERVE ARE REVIEWED, AND REMEDIAL MEASURES SUCH AS BREAK-AWAY LIGHTING COLUMN SUPPORTS AND INSTALLATION OF SAFETY FENCES ON THE CENTRAL RESERVE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE LIGHTING COLUMNS ARE EXAMINED. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE CONSTRUCTION DESIGN AND SITING RECOMMENDATIONS RELATIVE TO THE NORMAL WIDTH OF CENTRAL RESERVES OUTLINED IN ROADSIDE SAFETY STRUCTURES, PUBLISHED BY SWOV IN 1970. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO A TYPE OF SAFETY FENCE WHICH OFFERS OPTIMUM SAFETY CONDITIONS, A FLEXIBLE, TWO-OFFSET-RAIL BARRIER THAT USES A RIGID WIDE BEAM COMPOSED OF TWO GUIDE RAILS AND SPACERS FUNCTIONING AS A BOX GIRDER. THE BEAM IS MOUNTED ON POSTS CAPABLE OF A FAIRLY FLEXIBLE CROSS-MOVEMENT. THE ADVANTAGES OF CENTRAL RESERVE LIGHTING OVER CONVENTIONAL LIGHTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ARE DISCUSSED, AND EMPHASIS IS LAID ON THE NEED FOR COORDINATING THE SITING OF LIGHTING COLUMNS AND SAFETY FENCES. /TRRL/
