THIS PAPER DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE WHICH CAN GIVE THE HIGHWAY ENGINEER A NEW DIMENSION FOR ROAD DESIGN. THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM IS EXAMINED TOGETHER WITH THE MEASURES AVAILABLE WHICH CAN REDUCE NOISE FROM ROAD TRAFFIC. EXAMPLES ARE ALSO QUOTED FROM ACTUAL CASES IN WHICH NOISE STUDIES WERE CARRIED OUT. /AUTHOR/
