THE ROAD IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS--SWITZERLAND

THE FIRST PART OF THIS STUDY CONCERNS THE FORMATION OF QUEUES AS A MEASURE OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO DESCRIBE QUEUE FORMATION, WITH THE DEFINITION OF QUEUE WEIGHTING AND CONGESTION INDEX DERIVED FROM IT, BY AN INTUITIVE-EMPIRICAL FORMULA. THE FORMULA IS CONSTRUCTED FROM THE PARAMETERS: QUEUE SIZE, SPEED OF QUEUE, AND AVERAGE HEADWAY. THE MATHEMATICAL FORMULA CHOSEN TO DESCRIBE CONGESTION CAN BE USED AS AN AID IN THE STUDY OF THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS: DETERMINATION OF PRACTICAL CAPACITY; DETERMINATION OF P.C.V.'S; ASSESSMENT OF ROAD WIDENING; EVALUATION OF ROAD NETWORKS; AND QUESTIONS OF COMFORT (LEVEL OF SERVICE). THE RESULTS OBTAINED SHOW THAT THE DIFFERENT TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ON VARIOUS TYPES OF ROAD CAN BE PRESENTED AND ANALYZED BY THE METHOD PROPOSED. THE SECOND PART OF THIS STUDY DESCRIBES A METHOD WHICH MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE PERIODICALLY AND IN SITU THE MEASUREMENT OF ROAD SURFACE WEAR DUE TO TRAFFIC, AND ESPECIALLY TO STUDDED TIRES. IN THE THIRD PART OF THIS STUDY A COMPARISON IS MADE BETWEEN TWO CENTRAL BARRIERS ON THE N. 1 MOTORWAY ON THE BASIS OF INVESTIGATION INTO ACCIDENTS ON THE BERN-LENZBURG SECTION. THE TWO BARRIERS ARE THE BRITISH ROPES' WIRE SAFETY FENCE SYSTEM AND THE AARGAU CANTON UNSTRESSED DOUBLE-SIDED BEAM SAFETY FENCE SYSTEM. THE AIM OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE FOR EACH KIND OF THESE VERY DIFFERENT CENTRAL BARRIERS THEIR SUITABILITY AND QUALITIES IN CASE OF CRASH.
