PARKING LOT DESIGN STANDARDS
EVIDENCE SHOWS THAT AUTOMOBILE DIMENSIONS ARE MORE VARIABLE THAN THEY WERE 10 OR 15 YEARS AGO. THE DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS OFFERED HERE FOR SURFACE LOTS RANGE BETWEEN 8-1/2 AND 9-1/2 FEET (2.6 AND 2.9 M) FOR STALL WIDTHS AND SPECIFY PARKING MODULE DIMENSIONS BASED ON A STALL LENGTH OF 19 FEET (5.8 M). EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED NOT ON SIMPLY PRODUCING TABLES OF ACCEPTABLE DESIGN STANDARDS, BUT ON SHOWING THAT EACH FACILITY MERITS AN EVALUATION OF ITS EXPECTED PARKING CHARACTERISTICS, ITS NEEDED EFFICIENCY, AND ITS AESTHETIC REQUIREMENTS IN THE LIGHT OF PHYSICAL SITE CONDITIONS. THE DESIGNER MUST THEN BALANCE CONSIDERATIONS OF EFFICIENCY AGAINST QUESTIONS OF THE PATRON'S EASE IN PARKING AND OF THE NEED FOR AESTHETIC TREATMENT. /AUTHOR/
